The earliest origins of flannel go back to the 17th century, when it was created by the Welsh to replace plain wool garb. Made from worsted yarn with a nap (the texture the fabric is known for) on one or both sides of the garment, it was sourced from Wales’ various sheep, and meant to protect its wearers against the country’s harsh winters.
