Founded in 2011 by Keita Ikeuchi and Mihoko Mori, andWANDER is a Japanese outdoor label that gives functional clothing a unique perspective. Ikeuchi grew up in Atsugi-shi, a mountainous region of the Kanagawa Prefecture. As he grew up he developed an interest in clothes, especially in the prevalent trend of American ivy league-inspired collegiate style.
Meanwhile, Mori grew up in Aomori and Sapporo, with a father who was part of a mountaineering club and a grandmother who made clothes, resulting in a childhood that vacillated between outdoor camping trips and learning how to tailor. Their respective journeys in the Japanese fashion industry brought them both to the Issey Miyake label, working under Miyake himself and adopting some of the legendary designer’s organic and ergonomic approaches to making garments that aren’t just beautiful, but eminently wearable.
Miyake’s philosophies highlight methods like using a single piece of fabric to reduce the labor that goes into a garment. Famously, his long-running line of heat-pleated garments revolutionized a line between luxury and activewear, staging fashion shows that really emphasized that these garments were made to move with the body, whether you were a dancer, an acrobat, or someone who simply wanted to live their life.
When andWANDER debuted in 2011, it could be inferred how some of those Miyake-isms subtly influenced the clever functionality of the pieces. Mori describes her design process as beginning with the details and cut of a garment, something she describes as “arranging a shape” and how it will complement the wearer and the intended activity.
This approach stands out in items like the Fishtail Octa Jacket, which is based on the classic M-51 military shape, but made with adjustable drawstrings for a high degree of customization around the fit, including a vintage-style snorkel hood and wind flap for blustery days. The signature HIDDEN green contrast stitch and 3M taping on the chest pockets and logos add a dose of digital futurism into the militaria staple.
The collaborative T-shirts in the partnership are also elevated with andWANDER’s signature oversized fit. The andWANDER H Logo tee reimagines both brands’ logos through interrogating two prominent shapes—the skewed triangle of andWANDER and the perfect circle surrounding the HIDDEN logo.
Paying homage to andWANDER’s roots, the Lenticular Tee references the Altocumulus Lenticularis clouds that can form above certain mountains, depicting an idyllic scene of an imaginary HIDDEN konbini located somewhere in the outskirts of Mount Fuji. The hybrid jersey material offers maximum breathability, combining a cotton outer with a COOLMAX inner fabric, and the nylon flap chest pocket on the front referencing classic outdoor jackets.
