The latest release from HIDDEN features our collaboration with legendary video game Jet Set Radio, celebrating its 25th anniversary. Originally released in 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast, Jet Set Radio is the brainchild of director Masayoshi Kikuchi and concept designer Ryuta Ueda, who both worked at the former Sega studio called Smilebit.
Taking elements of burgeoning subcultures like underground streetwear, graffiti, and aggressive in-line skating, the game itself was also a rebel yell against a trend towards hyperrealistic aesthetics in video games, eschewing them entirely for a cel-shaded art style reminiscent of dynamic anime and comic book visuals.
The graphic language of the collaborative collection draws mainly from the iconic logo designs of Sega and Jet Set Radio, but pays homage to the characters Beat, Gum, and Mew, who appear as the featured protagonists on one of the tees.
Further, one of the T-shirts pays homage to the same one Beat wears in the game, featuring the stylized katakana of his name:ビート. Other accessories and graphics reference early-2000s style and graffiti culture, resulting in bags that could definitely hold a spray can or two, and vibrant mesh truckers that were synonymous with the era’s trends.
