In 1999, an animated series called Downtown hit MTV’s airwaves, and the network known for shows like Daria, Beavis & Butthead, and Celebrity Deathmatch put out what is regarded as one of the most underrated animated series of all time. Once known primarily for music videos (and in the era of pop cultural dominance thanks to shows like Total Request Live), the network was also spreading its wings with programming clearly influenced by alternative cultures.
